Lillian was Kate's great grandmother (Gommy's mom), Lillian Ramanop Lehmann. She and her husband ran a small grocery store in Downers Grove, Illinois. I believe she was the first generation of her family to be born in America (her parents immigrated from Germany), and I hear she was a great cook. She certainly had great taste in glasses.
Frances is Frances DePasquale Palazzolo, Scott's beloved Mum-Mum (Cora's mom). She was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to Italian parents. And when she traveled to Sicily to study as teenager, she caught the attention of Santino Palazzolo and wooed him back to America with her. Her philosophy on life is "Don't work, don't worry, drink whiskey." It must be working, because she is 100 and still going strong.
Frances is also Kate's grandmother, Frances Woods Hanley (Stephen's mom). She grew up in Newport, Rhode Island, had a great sense of humor, and taught Kate how to make hospital corners--something Kate didn't fully appreciate until much later in life.
